As soon as I got back to my office, I called Frenchy.

“You can tell Theodorou he was right. Fortesque murdered his wife.”

“Talk to me, Pretty Baby.”

I told him about the cut on the neck and about the witnesses, leaving out the names for the moment.

“That’s it?”

“Well, yeah.”

“This is why I keep reminding you—you’re not a real detective. It’s your word against his about the neck and you can’t convict a man because he has skunk hair. Your witnesses didn’t see his face. No identification. The DA won’t touch it. He didn’t admit anything, did he?”

“Well, no.”

I heard him sucking on a cigarette.

“Well, at least you confirmed what we already knew. I’ll come by for a smile later and we can drown your sorrow.”
